Last week we talked about the best oils to have in your arsenal, both essential and carrier oils. Coconut oil is one that should make an appearance both in your kitchen, and bathroom cabinets. This "cure-all"oil makes an appearance in many kitchen recipes and personal care products. It can be used for frying, moisturizer, oil pulling, pretty much anything. If we were to write down its uses, the list would be endless.
When it comes to cooking, coconut oil is great alternative to vegetable or canola oils. It has a high oxidation (smoke) point, which makes it great for high-heat cooking, such as frying. Coconut oil can also replace butter in baking for a vegan alternative. When making popcorn, replace butter with it to give it a healthier kick. Plus, it tastes delicious!
In the bathroom, coconut oil also has a myriad of uses. Use it as moisturizer, conditioner, teeth whitener. It also has sunscreen properties by blocking 20% of the sun's UV rays. It is, however, important to to understand that coconut oil doesn't provide the same protection as conventional sunscreen which blocks approximately 90% of UV rays.
Use Coconut Oil:
Below are just a few uses for that big jar you have sitting in your kitchen cabinet:
- Add it to your dishes for a boost in flavor and your metabolism.
- Improve your dental health by using it as mouthwash.
- Relieve skin irritation.
- Fight infections. Coconut oil has anti-bacterial properties that can help treat infections.
- Protect hair from damage. Comb a bit of this oil through your hair before hitting the beach for the day.
There have a few recent articles advising that this magical oil is actually UNHEALTHY for you. It is important to know that there is no evidence that it's harmful for you. Just like consumption of ANY product (healthy or not so healthy), MODERATION is key.
In short, I will continue to use coconut oil and purchase it in bulk! :D
